Hull Dance Choreographic Prize-Call for Artists-2017

Now in its fourth year, Hull Dance Prize has seen some of the region’s most talented Artists and Companies pass through the doors of Hull Truck Theatre. Performed to a packed audience and iconic Judges such as Lea Anderson, Hull Dance Prize provides a platform for Yorkshire’s up and coming emerging Artists.
This year’s Choreographic Competition will take place in Hull Truck Main House Theatre on Saturday 11 November.
We invite you to submit your idea through our open application process, with the potential to win a commissioning prize. A panel of industry specialists will choose five shortlisted choreographers to showcase their work at HDP2017.

The evening will see 2 Awards:
-Audience Award (£1,500), decided by a vote using audience response technology equipment after the 5 performances
-Specialist Panel Award (£3,500), a panel of three industry specialists will make an award for what they consider to be the best choreography which would benefit from further financial investment
The recipients of the prizes will develop an agreement with Hull Dance about how the money will be used to further develop their piece

What will I receive?
-The chance for informal feedback as well as structured feedback from the panel
-Professional photographs and film footage of their performance

Who can apply?
-Applicants must be 18 +
– Applications are welcome from Artists/Companies based in the Yorkshire and the Humber region working in the small-scale, independent sector

What work can I submit?
-The work must be no longer than 15 minutes’ long
-Your piece should be new work created during 2017. It can have been performed to an audience a maximum of 3 times but not have won any previous showcase events
-We want original and stimulating choreography
-The work must fit the contemporary idiom

What are the Professional Panel Criteria?
When awarding the prize of £3,500 the judges look at the work in terms of:

– The originality of the choreography and relationship to the stated idea
-The cohesiveness of the piece
-Whether the piece has an interesting concept or aesthetic that could be developed further?

When will I need to be available?
You will need to be available on Friday 10 November for rehearsals and get-in and all day Saturday 11 November

How do I apply?
-Please provide us with the name of artist/company and a maximum of 500 words about artist/company including an artistic statement
-Maximum 800 words about your idea for the work being submitted. Tell us as much as you can about your choreographic process and intention (including the name of your piece and, if it has been performed previously, when/where else it has been performed)
-Artistic CV of choreographer (MUST INCLUDE CONTACT DETAILS)
-1 strong Image – high quality JPEG (could be used for marketing) this image needs to be clear and be something that represents you and/or your company.
-1 video link to your previous work or the piece of work that you are proposing to submit and have already created

The five companies/artists chosen will have limited time for get-in/rehearsal at Hull Truck Theatre. Therefore, the work must be polished and ready to perform by Saturday 11 November, this means once chosen you should work on your piece in your own time
Your piece will need to be technically simple with lighting available but limited. (The prize is about the choreography not set design). If selected you will be contacted by the technician to discuss your requirements, and what is possible, prior to the prize
